Will Your Money Last as Long as You Do?

One of the most common concerns we hear from clients is,“Will I actually have enough money to retire comfortably?”

It’s an understandable question. After all, most people spend decades building their wealth through a combination of pensions, ISAs, savings accounts, investments and sometimes property. Yet these different assets are often viewed separately rather than as part of one joined-up strategy designed to support the life they want to live.

This is where Lifetime Cashflow Planning can make a real difference.

At Blackdown Financial, we use Lifetime Cashflow Planning to help clients see the bigger picture. Instead of focusing solely on individual products or investment performance, it brings together all aspects of your finances to create a clearer view of your future and whether you’re on track to achieve your goals.

The starting point is simple. Before looking at pounds and pence, we focus on what retirement actually means to you. Is it travelling more? Helping children or grandchildren financially? Moving home? Reducing working hours gradually? Or simply having the freedom to spend more time doing the things you enjoy?

Once we understand what you want your future to look like, we can begin to estimate what that lifestyle may cost and compare it against your current financial position. This includes reviewing your income, expenditure, pensions, investments, savings and liabilities, whilst also taking into account factors such as inflation, tax and potential investment returns.

The result is a personalised financial model that projects how your finances may look throughout your lifetime.

This has become increasingly valuable in recent years as retirement planning has become far more challenging. People are living longer, inflation has had a significant impact on household spending and many retirees are concerned about whether their savings will keep pace with rising costs.

Research from the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association suggests that a single person now needs around £32,700 per year for a moderate standard of living in retirement and approximately £45,400 per year for a comfortable retirement. For couples, the figures rise to around £45,400 and £62,700 respectively.

At the same time, government analysis has highlighted that around 43% of working-age adults may not currently be saving enough to achieve their desired retirement lifestyle.

These figures can seem daunting, but one of the biggest benefits of cashflow planning is that it replaces guesswork with clarity.

A well-constructed Lifetime Cashflow Plan can show whether you’re on course to achieve your objectives and, importantly, what options are available if you’re not. Sometimes the solution may be increasing pension contributions. Sometimes it may involve reviewing your investment strategy, adjusting retirement spending or delaying retirement by a few years. Equally, the results can often be more positive than expected.

We recently worked with a client who assumed they would need to continue working for several more years before they could afford to retire. By bringing together all their assets and looking at their finances as a whole, we were able to demonstrate that they could retire earlier than they had originally thought. Nothing had changed financially overnight; they simply gained a clearer understanding of their overall position.

One of the reasons we believe cashflow planning is so powerful is that it changes the conversation. Rather than focusing on products, returns or account balances, it focuses on people, their ambitions and the life they want to lead.

Of course, no financial plan is ever set in stone. Markets move, legislation changes, inflation rises and falls, and personal circumstances evolve. A plan that is perfectly suited to your needs today may need adapting in the future.

That’s why regular reviews are such an important part of the process. At Blackdown Financial, our ongoing service includes regular planning discussions and annual reviews, allowing us to update assumptions, review progress and make adjustments where necessary to keep your plan aligned with your goals.

Technology and artificial intelligence are increasingly being used within financial services, helping advisers process information and model different scenarios more efficiently. Whilst these tools can be incredibly useful, they cannot replicate the human side of financial planning. They cannot fully understand your concerns, family circumstances, aspirations or emotions. Most importantly, they cannot build meaningful relationships or provide the reassurance that often accompanies important financial decisions.

Ultimately, Lifetime Cashflow Planning is about confidence. It helps answer one of life’s biggest financial questions: “Can I afford the future I want?”

By understanding where you are today, where you want to be tomorrow and the steps required to get there, you can make informed decisions with greater clarity and confidence.

If you’d like to find out whether you’re on track for the retirement you envision, we’d be delighted to help.

Warm regards,

Neil
